W hile nearly everything in my life to this point had shown me that I was destined to live a life full of disappointments, waking up in Luke’s bed on Thanksgiving morning had me considering the accuracy of that assumption.

A few days ago, I had just gotten out of the shower after returning from work and was at Luke’s place when I received a phone call. It was my mother. I moved to Rising Sun months ago and hadn’t heard from her once, but now, she was calling. The nerves I felt in the pit of my stomach could only be described as unsettling. I figured she would be relaying bad news.

“Hello?” I answered, the trembling in my voice matching the quaking of my insides.

“Hi, Nikki. How are you?” she responded cheerfully.

“Um, good.”

I said nothing else.

I was waiting for it.

Waiting for whatever blow she was about to deal me.

“I have you on speaker phone. Your sisters are here, too. It’s been so long since we’ve talked with you and we wanted to reach out and see how you’re doing since you’ve moved. Thanksgiving is nearly here. We wanted to check in with you. Do you like it there?”

Seriously?

How was she acting like everything was fine between us? That they all hadn’t betrayed me on more than one occasion?

Suddenly, I was irrationally angry. The rage I was feeling boiled up inside me in a matter of seconds and, without warning, I exploded.

“Excuse me?! How do I like it here?!” I shouted.

Luke was present during this and he was immediately concerned.

“Chill out, Nik,” Jessie piped up. “What are you so worked up about?”

“Are you kidding me?” I shot back. “It’s been months… months …since I’ve moved here. I’ve heard nothing from any of you. And you want to know what I’m worked up about? How about you tell me what the real reason for this phone call is because I don’t believe you’ve all suddenly realized how awful you’ve been and want to make things right?”

“You haven’t heard from us, but the phone works both ways. Why haven’t you called us?” my mom asked.

My eyes nearly popped out of my head. Luke stood and started walking toward me.

“What?! There’s no way that’s a serious question. I haven’t called you because I’m not sure what I’d even say to any of you. The three of you have done nothing but betray me. Perhaps you should ask yourself what could ever possibly make me want to call you.”

“I guess her reaction says everything. She’s still bitter and angry. Life can’t be that good,” Jessie taunted me.

That’s when it smacked me in the face.

Right then and there .

My mother and sisters were pure evil and I allowed them to have control over me for too long. They did what they did to me and I was so stuck on the disappointment of them not caring about me that I wouldn’t allow anyone to care about me.

Even someone who would love me through my hang ups.

Someone like Luke.
